Gary Hustwit, the independent filmmaker behind “Helvetica” and “Objectified,” has partnered with cinematographer Luke Geissbuhler to work on a third documentary, “Urbanized.” Gary’s first film documentary, named after the font Helvetica, looks at typography, graphic design and global visual design. Gary’s second documentary, “Objectified,” looks at industrial design, manufactured objects, and our relationship with them. The last installment of his trilogy on design will highlight the planning and development that goes into building cities.

In his video on KickStarter, an online fundraising platform, Gary says,

“I think a lot of people don’t really realize how much design goes into the planning and development of a city and how that design affects our lives…So we’ve been travelling around the world, talking to mayors and government officials, architects, developers, urban planners, and also ordinary people who have changed their city in some way.”

Gary also writes, “The world’s population is in the midst of a massive migration to urban areas, and the design solutions our cities implement in the next 20 years will be critical.”

To help fund Gary’s project, donate on his project’s KickStarter website or consider purchasing merchandise from his previous documentaries. Learn more on the official “Urbanized” blog, where the filmmaker writes about things like Mumbai skywalks and Detroit’s auto industry.
